When I was young, I used to have regular conversations with my mom about what she called “the ugly duckling syndrome.” People tend to project their insecurities onto others by comparing them negatively with themselves: “She looks like me, but she doesn’t have these things that I have! She must be ugly!” This thinking leads people into a spiral of negative self-talk where they feel worse about themselves than before because they compare themselves negatively with others instead of appreciating their uniqueness or strengths.
The bottom line: If someone tells us something negative about ourselves (e.g., “You’re too short!”), we need only say “thank you” and move on with our day. No matter how harsh those words may sound when coming from someone else—and no matter how hard we try not to listen—they don’t change anything deep inside us; all they do is make us feel bad about ourselves again!
